This Pack is suitable for Care Homes and Domiciliary Care Services

Overview

This training package is one of a series of refresher modules aimed at care staff involved with the administration of medicines in care homes and domiciliary care services. The intention is that these should be completed as private study or, for example, at the end of a staff meeting working in pairs.

The aim of this training package is to enable care staff to understand

• Why antibiotics are prescribed and how they work
• The importance of giving antibiotics at the correct time even if this falls outside the normal medicine rounds
• How some commonly prescribed antibiotics should be administered

Background

This pack has been developed by pharmacists who work on a day to day basis with care staff. The topic areas chosen are those where the team regularly find problems.

This package is designed to give staff an understanding of why prescriptions for antibiotics should be obtained as quickly as possible and why doses should be appropriately spaced throughout the day. It also seeks to encourage staff to use the Patient Information Leaflet supplied with medicines as an information source.
