CO2 Savings
Why are we calculating the carbon savings?
The amount of carbon required to produce and deliver items to the University is considerable. Historically, this
information has been very difficult to obtain. However, with increasing pressure to produce this data, the University
now needs this information to give an accurate record our carbon savings through reuse.
How do we calculate the carbon savings?
Furniture
For a number of years, the University of Leeds have been working closely with our furniture suppliers. With
increasing pressure on the furniture industry to demonstrate sustainable practices, which includes monitoring their
carbon footprint, some of our key suppliers have been working on furniture carbon calculators. Through this link, we
are able to calculate average data for seating, desking and storage units.
Equipment
As a development on a furniture reuse register, reuse@leeds has yet to establish clear sub-categories for
equipment. However, by working closely with our suppliers and by following guidelines offered by DEFRA, we
expect to be recording this information soon.
Stationery
As with equipment, we have yet to establish clear sub-categories for stationery. We are working closely with
our suppliers and will be following DEFRA guidelines to establish carbon calculations for the most popular items reused.
How is the data recorded?
Once an item is reserved on the system, it is the responsibility of the users to discuss collection. Once collected,
the items need to be signed off by the collector. Once signed off, this information is automatically recorded on a
database which is managed by the sustainability team at the University. This information can be extracted as required
and can be used to report our carbon savings.
